Birding @ Ramadevara Betta
“It is obvious that we can no more explain a passion to a person who has never experienced it than we can explain light to the blind – T.S. Eliot”
Rightly said, passion should be experienced it cannot be explained. Myself and Ganesh planned a birding trip to Ramadevara betta on Jan 13th. We started at 5.30 am towards Ramadevara betta which is around 35km and reached in no time.
Ganesh pulled out his binocular and heeded the sky for soaring eagles and vultures. After a while of scan we got to see a long-billed vulture sitting on the rock, it is so sad to see the declining population of vultures last time I had seen around 5 families and today there were around 2 families left in the locality.
Forest department has taken a step forward in conserving these vultures and made this region as Vulture Sanctuary, however we need to wait and watch for these birds to survive and continue breeding for next generation.
We made a small trek around the rocks and spotted (Plain prinia, Red whiskered bulbul, golden oriel) and few more.
Ganesh was busy scanning the holes in the rocks, usually birds make them as hideouts. He spotted Egyptian Vulture in one of the hole. After a while the mating pair came out of the hide and gave us some opportunity to photograph.
Up the trail there is a temple we took this trail to explore more birds and were lucky in spotting (Paradise Flycatcher, yellow browed bulbul, common iora)
We decided to call off our birding and returned home, on the way back we had delicious bidadi “Thatte Idli”.
